Lincoln Daily News welcomes letters of appreciation, information and opinion on matters pertaining to the community.

Controversial issues:
As a community we need to be able to talk openly about matters that affect the quality of our lives. The most effective and least offensive manner to get your point across is to stick to the issue and refrain from commenting on another person's opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

 In support of our libraries

Dear editor at Lincoln Daily News,

Freedom of speech is under attack all across the United States. The right to a public education is being lost as the Dept. of Education is defunded & privatized. Dept of Ag is eliminating money for food pantries and school lunches.

Americans need public libraries as a public square that is accessible to all. The local library provides children's story hour, bookmobile, and lectures on all sorts of subject. It also provides basic needs like a bathroom if you happen to walk by and need to use the facilities. In Springfield, there is hardly anywhere downtown where you can use a public toilet. Lincoln Library still has a facility to relieve yourself if you need to.

Libraries are great resources. They can point you in the right direction if you don't know where to start as the research dept has access to materials that we don't have at home.

[to top of second column in this letter]

We need public libraries because they are one of the last resources open to everyone. I've taught people to read at the library.

Prisoners in correctional facilities use the library to learn about the law. Books make us all smarter. Libraries are a gateway to new ideas. Those new ideas expand our minds and teach us empathy. We need libraries.

Sincerely,
Anne Hofferkamp
